A new design method for a polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensating filter was discussed. The method uses an optimization algorithm to minimize the maximum differential group delay (DGD) in a given transmission band. Results showed that this approach performed significantly better than synthesis of the inverse of the transmission matrix using its Fourier expansion when tested on several different examples of PMD media.
