Abstract

In innovative crack arresting solution based on inserting and bonding z-pins into a cured carbon-epoxy laminate is presented. The crack arresting solution is investigated experimentally under mode-I loading conditions and simulated numerically using homogenized as well as high fidelity modelling approaches. For the interface tested, it was shown that the mode-I fracture toughness of the interface can be increased by a seven fold factor. Numerical results gave reasonable agreement with the experimental findings.
