Abstract
Benzodiazepine (BDZ) abuse was found to cause diverse harmful effects among methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients. The current report summarizes the Adelson MMT Clinic’s 20-year experience with BDZ-related factors in terms of prevalence and trends of abuse of BDZ, as well as sleep, depression, anxiety, retention and survival, and hepatitis C. BDZ abuse was found to be associated with poor outcomes that extended to all of these aspects. It was related to poor sleep and depression, both of which improved after BDZ discontinuation. It characterized patients with anxiety, it was found to be more prevalent among hepatitis C seropositive patients, and it was a risk factor for hepatitis C sera conversion among hepatitis C sera-negative patients.
