Abstract
As the demand for total knee replacement is expected to soar in the upcoming years, the efforts to define and diagnose the devastating implant infection are increasing. The experts in various scientific societies recommended definitional criteria, created scores, and designed evidence-based algorithms to establish the diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection. The definitional criteria mostly consist of serum, synovial fluid, tissue biomarkers as well as microbiology results. Algorithms consider infection likeliness as well as the invasiveness of tests in their sequence.
