Presents a fictionalized account of the fate of the Jewish community of Bolechów, Poland (now Bolekhiv, Ukraine) in the Holocaust, based on interviews with 20 former residents of the town. Describes the German occupation in June 1941 and a massacre in October in which 2,000 Jews were killed. In September 1942, 1,600 Jews were deported, and another 400 were killed. Those who remained were working in factories. A labor camp was built there in summer 1943; however, on 25 August it was torched by the SS and Vlasov recruits and most of the 900 Jews in the camp were burned alive. also relates the stories of several Jews who had fled to the forest or gone into hiding with Polish families, and who were liberated by Soviet forces in summer 1944.
