Abstract

In the last decades there has been an increasing interest in what constitutes creativity in design problem solving in general, and in the architectural domain in particular. In the present chapter, we outline the importance of creativity in architectural design, from the perspective of practice and education. First, we discuss how creativity as a domaingeneral skill can be defined, operationalized, and assessed. Thereafter, we elaborate on creativity as a specific-domain skill. We analyze what constitutes creativity in the architectural field and discuss its relevance for the design problem solving activity. Specifically, we reflect upon the role of creativity in architectural education, and in the design studio. Finally, we elaborate on the assessment and self- assessment of creativity in architectural design and offer final conclusions.
