This chapter describes historical perspectives, the current status, and future directions of the counseling profession in Israel. It also provides information regarding counselor education, counseling practice, and diversity issues in Israel. Currently the use of organizational counseling is very popular, such as in the banking system, in high-tech companies, and among organizations that have customer service departments. The only subprofession within counseling that is well known to the public, that has some legal position in Israel, and that has its own active and relatively significant association is school counseling. The history of counseling in Israel can be traced back to the period of Palestine, when the Hadassah Vocational Institute was established in 1946. Continuing studies and long-term training are offered to novice school counselors under the supervision of their municipal counselor inspector.
