N2 - The rate constants for conformational isomerization of the initial S1 state of syn-(ethyl,methyl)bimane [4,6-diethyl-3,7-dimethyl-1,5-diazabicyclo[3.3.0]octa-3,6-diene-2,8-dione] are correlated with the corrected solvent dielectric relaxation times in a series of n-alkanols (fluorescence, 20 ps excitation pulse). Similar rate constants for two other syn-9,10-dioxabimanes show that solvent behavior is the controlling feature in the isomerization, and in a number of other processes involving fast charge rearrangements.
