Abstract
1. (1) On electrical stimulation of a definite region of the mid-brain in the mesencephalic cat locomotor activity appears. 2. (2) By regulating the strength of stimulation it is possible to change the speed of running and the gait. 3. (3) The basic characteristics of walking and running of the mesencephalic animal are similar to the corresponding characteristics in the intact animal. 4. (4) It is assumed that the control of walking and running in the intact animal is brought about through change in the excitability of a definite region of the mid-brain.
