Abstract
This chapter studies texts that may deal with domestic issues or with global matters, and they use Quranic verses to support their arguments. It focuses on excerpts that make use of a single Quranic passage, verse 13 of chapter 49, which covers three aspects: first, it deals with individuals, men and women, and can be understood as calling for gender equality; second, it deals with the existence of different races and tribes and can be interpreted as a call for racial equality; and third, it concentrates on ethico-religious aspects, advising the believers to discern people by piety. The chapter shows the centrality of the verse in contemporary discussions associated with both the appeasing and the confrontational expressions of Islam, the ruptures in the unity of the Islamic community, and the integration of Muslims with non-Muslims.
