Abstract

A systematic procedure has been developed for process unit design based on the " worst case" combination of physical property values and other process variables that are bounded within uncertainty limits. This new procedure has been implemented using Polymath™ and MATLAB® for the design of a heat exchanger and tubular reactor. It is shown that there is no simple relationship between the magnitude of the uncertainties and the overdesign needed; thus the use of the systematic procedure is recommended.
