Conserved vector currents and invariance properties in Lagrangian field theory

Abstract

It is shown that conserved vector currents in a local Lagrangian theory must stem from the invariance of the Lagrangian under general gauge transformations. Thus there exists a unique way of obtaining conserved vector currents, namely, using the generalized Noether theorem.
