Abstract

The complement system plays a major role in natural resistance to bacterial and viral infections. For this purpose, it expresses many biological activities such as membranolysis, leukocyte chemotaxis, opsonization and enhancement of phagocytosis, release of mediators of inflammation, and more. Twenty-two serum proteins have been so far identified as complement components. Nine of them are serine proteases: C1r, C1s, C2, Factor B, Factor D, Factor I, MASP-1, MASP-2, and MASP-3 .... . © 2007
