Abstract

A retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics of 20 pairs of siblings with Type I diabetes mellitus is presented. The analysis included: Sex, age at diagnosis, mode of presentation, the presence of islet cell antibodies, insulin requirements relative to body weight and HbA1 levels in the first year. In comparison with the group of first affected siblings we found that the siblings who subsequently contracted the disease were significantly older, were less often hospitalized at diagnosis, and had smaller insulin requirements at diagnosis and after 6 months of treatment for a similar degree of diabetes control.
