Abstract

Colonoscopy was performed in 84 patients because of radiological and/or clinical suspicion of colonic cancer. In 15, malignant tumors were proven, three of which were completely unsuspected on X ray. In 25 other patients, benign tumors (polyps) were found, 15 suffered from inflammatory disease of the colon and in 29 abnormality was found. Polypectomy was performed through the colonoscope in 10 cases. Colonoscopic examination allows early and accurate pathological diagnosis of colonic disease, especially cancer, and complete removal of benign polyps. It is thus of aid in avoiding unnecessary operations.
