Abstract

The technical aspects of performing colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) have great importance for the execution of a successful and meaningful CCE study. The second-generation PillCam COLON capsule (Colon Capsule 2) has been equipped with lens that has a wider angle of view and an adjustable transmission rate of images per second to a new data recorder (DR3). These features have increased the sensitivity of CCE by nearly 30% in identifying patients with polyps measuring at least 6 mm. Yet, this increase is dependent on two basic premises: the bowel must be adequately cleansed and the capsule must pass through the entire colon. To achieve these two goals, it is of utmost importance to follow precise guidelines, which will guarantee adequate cleansing of the colon in 80% of patients and a complete capsule pass rate of up to 90%. Once the study is completed, the reviewer must examine the images diligently. The best capsule technology cannot compensate for sloppy reading. Guidelines for proper reading have been formulated.
