Abstract
The intranasal application of cocaine HCl to abort cluster headaches is described. In two patients cluster headaches were aborted within seconds by self-application of a cocaine solution to the region of the sphenopalatine foramen. The risk of addiction is negligible with 5%-10% solutions. In view of the beneficial effect observed in these two cases it is suggested that cocaine applied in this way is valuable in the treatment of refractory cases of cluster headaches.
