CLAUSEWITZ'S FINAL NOTES.

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Among Prussian general and military theorist Carl von Clausewitz's (1780-1831) literary remains are two notes written toward the end of his work on 'On War' that discuss his planned revision of the nearly completed book. Long valued as indicators of Clausewitz's intellectual development in the course of writing 'On War,' only one of these notes is dated (10 July 1827), and scholars have traditionally inferred that the second was written in 1830. However, close attention to the texts of 'On War' and the notes, plus other considerations, makes a date shortly prior to 10 July 1827 more probable.
