Abstract

Originally, cheirographon (from Greek cheir, hand) denotes an autograph confirmation, especially in connection with a legal act. This is the case, for example, in Delphic manumission inscriptions from the late Hellenistic and early Roman period (cf. FD III 6:12 ll. 10–12), and in the Latin legal documentation of later republican and early imperial Italy (Kaser 1971: 234 n. 33).
