Characterization of gravitational theories by cumulative effects in free particles' motion and in the behaviour of clocks

Abstract

Kinematical properties of gravitation which are equivalent to the geodetic hypothesis of Einstein's theory of gravitation are looked for. It is shown that a generalized vorticity theorem, as well as the possibility of synchronizing adjacent clocks during a finite time interval, characterize Einstein's theory. Some work is done also to characterize special relativity.
