Abstract

Primary vascular disorders are an infrequent cause of myelopathy and, in general, they affect the thoracolumbar cord much more frequently than the cervical cord. Nevertheless, the cervical cord may suffer from both infarction and spontaneous hemorrhage. Predisposing factors for cervical cord bleeds are the various vascular malformations, previous vascular events in the same region, and bleeding diatheses. Predisposing factors for spinal infarctions include preexisting arterial stenosis, atherosclerosis, and chronic hypoperfusion. In this chapter, we will discuss the pathogenesis, range, and frequency of nontraumatic vascular disorders affecting the cervical spine with comments on their management and prognosis.
