Abstract
This work proposes a practical approach for predicting essential fragmentation information from dynamic impact events. Specifically, the prediction of fragment statistics is obtained by a two-step process: (1) a well-resolved Autodyn2d calculation of the impact event, during which important state variables (related to failure and erosion of elements) are saved for post-processing; and (2) post-processing of this data to predict the fragmentation process resulting from the impact event. Comparison of the numerical results with experimental data for the fragment size distribution and the evolution of the debris cloud indicates that the physical model implemented in the post-processing module is reasonably accurate.
