Abstract
An elastic plate with a through-the thickness or a part-through-the-thickness crack is considered. The formulation incorporates the action of both bending and stretching as well as closure effects of the crack face contact. The lateral force-displacement nonlinear relation is derived for an infinite supported plate which is assumed to be under an in-plane compression force and a lateral force uniformly distributed along the crack line. Influence of the compressive force on the bearing capacity is shown. Stability of the plate under a lateral impact, and existence of an optimal initial compressive force is discussed.
