Back reaction of clocks and limitations on observability in closed systems

Abstract

The back reaction due to measurements in a closed system was examined for the particular case that the measurement is modeled by a von Neumann-like interaction and the ideal clock approximated by a free nonrelativistic particle. It was observed that the harmony between the fundamental postulates of quantum mechanics and von Neumann's measurement theory breaks down if a physical clock is used as a timing device for the measurement.
