Abstract

Integral representations for the response to a time-harmonic ring load pressure acting on the surface of a cylindrical cavity are shown to converge slowly in the near field region of load application. Asymptotic solutions for the dynamic response in this region, yielding simple analytic expressions in terms of the spatial variables and forcing frequency are obtained. The solution is seen to consist of a superposition of the singular static solution and additional terms describing the dynamic effect. The dynamic effect is observed to vanish as the frequency approaches zero and as the field point approaches the cavity surface, thereby confirming previous calculations of questionable accuracy.
