Abstract

Transformational methods of picture encoding, expand the signal realization on a certain orthogonal basis with subsequent pixel-wise quantization of the resultant signal representation coefficients. Supplementing transformational encoding by encoding a sequence of coefficient magnitudes in a decreasing order of magnitudes results in a two-stage transformational encoding method. When this method is applied to two-dimensional pictures, the method approximates the sequence of transform coefficient magnitudes as a decreasing function which is parametrically described by very few numbers. By using cosine transformation a reduction to 1.0 - 1.5 bit/pixel was achieved.
