Abstract
We present prospective study on 35 patients undergoing cochlear implantation (CI) using minimal access surgery combined with suprameatal technique. The Suprameatal approach (SMA) was developed in our department in 1999 and 183 patients were implanted using this technique until now. The new approach allows us to eliminate the risk of damaging facial nerve and chorda tympani and the possibility of improper electrode insertion. The combination of minimal access surgery with Suprameatal approach provides the surgeon with a simple and safe technique with minimal drilling and improved esthetic results.
