Abstract
The authors consider the effect of the nonparallel section of a nondirectional coupler on the overall coupling process and the extent to which it affects the design of couplers and laser arrays. For this purpose the theory developed previously for parallel waveguides is generalized to describe approximately the coupling among nonparallel waveguides. This is achieved by slowly varying the waveguide separation. The analysis yields mode amplitudes in each waveguide and their dependence on geometry of the nonparallel section.
