Abstract

The term 'antidepressant' and current classifications of antidepressant, are somewhat problematic. The monoamine hypothesis provided an important heuristic framework for understanding antidepressants. More complex models of depression and antidepressants continue to evolve. A more mechanistic approach to the classification of antidepressants should be aimed for.
