Abstract
In a female patient with left renal vein occlusion due to carcinoma of the kidney, selective left renal angiography demonstrated venous drainage from the kidney of the portal system. This shunt resulted from the development of collateral channels extending from intrarenal veins via perforating capsular veins, retroperitoneal veins and via mesenteric channels to the portal vein. In order to outline the venous drainage of the affected kidney, large quantities of contrast material must be injected rapidly into the renal artery.
