N2 - A time-dependent Mueller-like formalism was used to optimize performance in fiber-optic sensing scenarios, where the RF envelope of the interrogating signal is distorted by polarization mode dispersion (PMD)/polarization dependent loss (PDL). The proposed formalism was applied to fiber optic sensors that use short pulses and time domain reflectometry. It was observed that a short input pulse will generate a series of output pulses, each resulting from a round trip to the respective reflecting sensor and back. The results show that complete characterization of the polarization dependence of a fiber sensor should have great potential in the analysis of the effects of PMD and PDL.
