Abstract
A patient with abdominal pain and hemorrhagic ascitic fluid is described. The presence of alpha fetoprotein in the hemorrhagic fluid supported the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma, which was confirmed at autopsy. The determination of alpha fetoprotein in both serum and ascitic fluid is important for establishing the correct diagnosis in cases with hemorrhagic ascites.
