The problem of formal and constructive definition of texture pictures in image processing is addressed. Basic properties of representativity, integrity, and false sameness of the texture picture are formulated and are shown to lead to a definition of textures and to the algorithmic approach for handling them. Major known approaches to texture synthesis and analysis are briefly reviewed to show their consistency with the suggested algorithmic one.
