A simple screened potential explaining the structure of the periodic table

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

A simple screened Coulomb potential is proposed, of the form -Zeff(r)/r, with Zeff a linear function of r going from the actual nuclear charge at the origin to 1 at some distance Ro (and beyond). Atomic orbital energies calculated for the first half of the periodic table show remarkable agreement with experiment.
