Abstract
A generic signature-based technique that can be used effectively for the retrieval based on many different, application-specific, notions of similarity is presented. For a variety of general conditions, measures of goodness are obtained for the technique. The technique is also illustrated for a couple of very different examples. This technique is used for the specialized domain of real-valued sequences. In particular, whole-match queries, where the user has to specify the whole sequence.
