A prosopography of the Israelites in Old Testament traditions: a contextualized handbook

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

"The current Handbook is a prosopography of Israelites in the Old Testament, focusing on the traditional and not a collection of strictly historical figures. ... I have included here every named individual who has the slightest possibility of being Israelite... My aim is the registration, contextualization and evaluation of the numerous Israelites in the OT.... The problems involved in the origin of "Israel" and the impossibility of distinguishing between the early Israelites and the Cisjordanian Canaanites on the ethno-linguistic level are discussed by many.... All one can state at this stage is that Hebrew and fringe Canaanite clearly differ from Phoenician or rather coastal Canaanite ( Phoenician and presumably Philistian), which have a common origin, viz.the Canaanite dialect continuum of the 2nd millennium BCE found notably in the Amarna material...."
