Abstract
A new single-line absorber in the form of Na5IO6 has been employed for 129I Mössbauer spectroscopy. It is characterized by a relatively large significantly larger than that of Cul[f=0.027(20)], the universally adopted single line 129I absorber. The linewidth Γ measured for zero effective thickness is 0.98 mm s -1, somewhat larger than that of CuI (Γ=0.78 mm s -1). The spectral features are compared with those of Na 3H2IO6, previously considered as a single-line absorber. The synthesis, chemical properties, and the potential applications of this absorber are described.
