Abstract
Using the multipole sum rule technique of French and Bansal, data from a number of nuclei in the sd-shell have been analysed to estimate the matrix elements of the f 7 2-d 3 2 effective interaction. The matrix elements obtained in this way are compared with those from other analyses using the more standard procedure of fitting energy levels, and reasonable agreement is obtained. A comparison with the results of reaction matrix calculations employing realistic two-body interactions is also presented.
