Abstract

Traditional societies in a modern setting regulate marriage and supervise sexual behavior to ensure the survival of the traditional family structure. These taboos on sexuality prevent young people from obtaining reliable information on intimate relations between men and women after marriage. This study examines how two collectivist traditional communities, the Arab Bedouins and the ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews, make use of formal and informal social mechanisms to prepare young women for marriage. The study’s participants included 12 young Arab Bedouin women and 12 young ultra-Orthodox women, all of whom were married and were willing to describe in a personal interview the process by which they were prepared for the wedding night. The findings show that while the ultra-Orthodox community provides organized instruction encompassing Jewish law and behavioral norms, as well as mental and emotional preparation for marriage, such instruction is random in Arab Bedouin society, with the exception of one private instructor. Ultra-Orthodox women describe their preparation for marriage as valuable and meaningful. By contrast, the lack of social institutionalization of bridal instruction leaves Arab Bedouin women at a disadvantage, preserving a patriarchal structure that harms their intimate rights and status in the family.
