Abstract
The current research investigates the characteristics of Israeli Hebrew speech expressed in disagreements in classroom discourse based on principles of dialogic teaching,highlighting the challenges and opportunities that arise in this encounter. Our corpus is based on recorded observations of 32 lessons with four teachers in three different classes in two elementary schools in the center of Israel. Using detailed micro-analysis,we demonstrate several linguistic and paralinguistic strategies that reflect Israeli Hebrew speech and dialogic discourse. In contrast to previous studies arguing that Israeli Hebrew speech is developing in two main directions (roughening and harshness alongside softening and tentativeness) depending on the interactional context, our findings indicate that these two trends may coexist within the same context, producing a unique style, a kind of "softened direct speech".
