Benzi Slakmon works in the fields of citizenship, the social sciences, and the humanities. In his research, he is focusing on pedagogy and the design of learning environments, with a particular emphasis on dialogue, deliberation, and collaborative learning, both with and without the use of technology. His research delves into how online discussions contribute to cognitive, social, and civic engagement. Further, it looks at how such discussions, along with citizen assemblies such as climate assemblies, advance civic education, public participation, and democratic innovation. Additionally, he scrutinizes the design elements, discourse, and spatial dynamics that influence learning outcomes.
He examines the role of emotions in learning environments, exploring how students express, interpret, and co-regulate emotions while discussing emotionally loaded topics.
In addition, Slakmon runs a longstanding Research-Practice Partnership on dialogic education. He has made significant contributions to the field of teacher education, focusing on the intersection of teachers' learning, dialogic education, and school change.
